A VETERANS DREAM
Now in my painful
peace I do dream,
of conflicts
past ; of battle fields obscene.
Of comrades dying
in the smoke and rain,
For there my
heart will evermore remain.
Did I know it
then that in sharing fate,
I would love
them still at a future date,
When age had
taken most memories away,
But none by time
would their lives decay.
I'm prouder now
than I have ever been,
And more clear
now is my lifelong dream,
We fought together
eager and so bold,
That I see more
clearly now that I am old.
Sleep Oh, brothers,
sleep a peaceful sleep,
Immortalized in the teardrops that we weep.
